TTA News Update

Jun 10 2009
I made a change to the wiki to hopefully cut down on spam. New accounts must wait 24 hrs before they are allowed to create new pages. I may adjust this up or down later.

The Space/Time Ultra-Drive, or STUD, is a faster-than-light (FTL) drive system developed around 2240CSD and largely replacing the earlier Hyperdrive system.

Technology

STUD operates by distorting the structure of normal space, 'folding' it so that the origin and destination points of the journey are brought closer together. The vessel can then 'attach' itself to the destination point before the distortion is released. Conventional drive systems are then used to take the starship to its final destination.

Impact

When STUD was introduced, it brought a great improvement in the speed and efficiency of interstellar travel and was rapidly adopted by commercial spacelines, as well as the TTA. Journeys that might have taken weeks of months using Hyperdrive, were now possible in days. Vessels could cross the 600 light year volume of the Federation in around three weeks and the corresponding reductions in journey times and operating costs brought about the age of fast, inexpensive space travel.

STUD also brings an improvement in the travelling experience, eliminating the strange symptoms experienced by most passengers in Hyperspace, leaving at most a brief disorientation as the transition occurs.
